How Online Roulette Works

Roulette is a simple casino classic, and online versions play in just the same way. The rules are simple. They work like this:

  • Each player makes a bet at the start of each round – you do this by placing your chips on the roulette table. Often, you’ll choose between inside and outside bets.
  • Once the betting time is over, all bets must be placed.
  • The croupier then flicks the ball into the spinning roulette wheel. If you’re playing live roulette, the croupier will do this live. If you’re playing online RNG roulette, the game will do this automatically.
  • The wheel stops moving and the ball settles in one of the numbered and coloured pockets.
  • All bets that featured the number or colour are successful and paid in line with the paytable.

Roulette Variants Explained

There are different types of roulette played in casinos across the world, and you’ll find these variants online too. The three main types include:

European Roulette

European Roulette is the most popular type of roulette, with many of our online roulette games following this format.

It offers a traditional casino feel, with the roulette wheel numbered from 0 to 36 – the roulette table then follows the same sequence too. This means there is a one in 37 chance of the ball landing on a specific number. The big difference with American Roulette is that there is only one zero in European Roulette, which means you get slightly more favourable odds and a lower house edge.

American Roulette

American Roulette has a slightly different roulette wheel, house edge and odds compared to European Roulette.

The biggest difference is that the roulette wheel features two zeros (0 and 00) as well as numbers from 1 to 36. The roulette table is very similar to both European and French Roulette, and you can make the same kinds of inside and outside bets.

With American Roulette and the addition of the double zero, the chance of landing the winning number on the roulette wheel is now 1 in 38 compared to 1 in 37. It also increases the house edge – which is the chance of the casino winning – to 5.27% up from 2.7% in European Roulette.

French Roulette

French Roulette is similar to European in that the wheel and table are numbered from 0 to 36. The table is slightly different, but you get the same betting options as with European Roulette. The main difference comes with the presence of the En Prison and La Partage rules.

Both these rules come into play with you make an even-money bet with a payout of 1:1 – this includes bets like red or black, odd or even, or high or low. If the ball then lands on zero, this is a losing bet. In European Roulette, you lose your bet. In French Roulette, these rules come into play.

  • En Prison: Basically meaning “in prison”. If the ball lands on zero and you lose your even money bet, you can take half your bet back as compensation or let it ride until the next spin. If you let half your bet ride, your chips are held in prison until the next spin. You win – with half of your stake – if your original bet comes in on the next spin.
  • La Partage: If the ball lands on zero and you lose your even money bet, you only get half your chips returned to you as compensation. There’s no option to keep them in prison.

Both rules can’t run at the same time. Your chosen French Roulette game will play with one or the other.

Other Types of Roulette

At 888casino, you can also play:

  • Low Stakes European Roulette – works exactly the same as European roulette, but with smaller stakes and wagers. Perfect for beginners, and those wanting to test their luck before hitting the main tables.
  • 3D Roulette – normal European rules with enhanced graphics and imagery, all designed to take your casino experience to new heights.

Online Roulette Bets & Payouts

When you play online roulette, you can choose between inside and outside roulette bets.

Outside Roulette Bets

An outside bet in roulette involves betting on the outside of the roulette table, usually to cover a group of numbers or colours. Popular outside bets include:

  • Colour Bet – pick red or black, it’s that simple.
  • Odd or Even Bet – bet whether the ball will land on an odd or even number.
  • High or Low – place a bet on either the first 18 numbers or the last 18 depending on how you think the ball will land.
  • Dozen Bet – bet on the boxes marked “1st12”, “2nd12”, or “3rd12”.
  • Column Bet – place a chip in one of the boxes marked “2 to 1” to bet on 12 numbers on the column above, not including 0.

Inside Roulette Bets

An inside roulette bet involves betting on the inside of the roulette table. Popular inside roulette bets include:

  • Straight-Up Bet – bet on any number on the board.
  • Split Bet – set your chips between any two numbers.
  • Street Bet – place a bet on an end row of numbers.
  • Corner Bet – bet on four numbers when chips are placed in a corner.
  • Line Bet – covers the six numbers at the end of two streets.
  • Trio – bet on either 0, 1 and 2 or 0, 2 and 3.
  • Top Line – place your chip at the corner to bet on 0, 1, 2 and 3.

What are the rules of online roulette?

The rules of online roulette are simple. Each player makes a bet by placing their chips on the roulette table. Once the betting time is over, the croupier will spin the wheel and drop the ball into the spinning wheel. When the wheel stops spinning, the ball will settle in a numbered pocket. Any bets that contained this number or colour will pay out.

What is the aim of roulette?

The aim of roulette is to correctly predict where the ball will land once the roulette wheel stops spinning. You can bet on the correct number, colour or whether it will be odd or even, as well as a whole host of other inside and outside bets.

What are the differences between European, American, and French Roulette?

Both European and French Roulette have roulette wheels and tables numbered from 0 to 36, while American Roulette has two zeros (0 and 00) as well as numbers up to 36. It reduces the odds of winning in American Roulette and increases the house edge. French Roulette has the same numbers and a similar layout to European, but also includes rules like En Prison and La Partage which come into play if you make an even-money bet and the ball lands on zero.

What are the main roulette bet types?

The main types of roulette bets are inside and outside bets. With inside bets, you bet on the numbers on the inside of the roulette table, with popular bets including straight-up bets and split bets. With outside bets, you place the chips on the outside of the roulette table, with popular bets including colour bets and high and low bets.

Can I play online roulette for real money at 888casino?

Yes, whether you play online roulette or live roulette in the 888casino, you can play for real money. Simply sign up for an 888casino account and deposit some funds into your casino account to bet with.

What is the safest bet in roulette?

There are no ‘safe bets’, as the results are purely by chance. However, some wagers have a higher chance of winning than others. For example, those with a nearly 50/50 chance of winning include:

  • Red or black
  • Odd or even
  • Low or high

Because of this, the payout on these bets tend to be much lower.

What does 00 mean in online roulette?

If you’re playing the American version, the wheel features two green numbers: 0 and 00. These can be bet on jointly (known as a row bet) or individually.

The odds for 00 are usually the same as betting on 0 in the European or French variants. However, with double the chance of landing on the green, American has a higher house advantage than other games.

What is the five number bet in roulette?

The five number bet is where players bet on five numbers consecutively.

It is only available on American tables, as it involves betting on the top line: 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3.

What is the most successful roulette strategy?

Popular strategies include the Martingale, the Labouchere, the Fibonacci and the Paroli. More unusual options such as Oscars’ Grind are also used by some players. No strategy is a guarantee of success, though expert tips can offer some insights into how to win at roulette.

How do you double your money in roulette?

Generally speaking, the simplest way to ‘double your money’ is to bet on red or black, high or low, or odd/even on the wheel. The odds of winning will be close to 50:50, and the payout is 1:1. So if you stake £10 and win you will get your original stake back, plus £10.
