GamProtect at 888: what UK players need to know

GamProtect is a safer gambling protection scheme used by participating UK gambling operators, including 888. If your 888 account has been restricted or closed because of GamProtect, this guide explains why that can happen, what information may be shared and how to ask for a review. The aim of GamProtect is to help protect people who may be at risk of serious gambling-related harm, especially where they may have accounts with more than one online gambling operator.

What is GamProtect?

GamProtect is part of the UK gambling industry's Single Customer View work. It provides a secure way for participating operators to share limited customer information where serious health-related gambling harm has been identified. 888 is a participating operator in GamProtect. Where a GamProtect match is found, 888 may need to take protective action on a UK account. Depending on the circumstances, this can include restricting access, closing an account or continuing an existing exclusion.

Why GamProtect exists

A customer can hold accounts with several gambling operators. Without a shared protection mechanism, one operator may identify serious harm while another operator has no visibility of that risk. GamProtect helps close that safety gap by allowing participating operators to act consistently when a customer has been identified as needing protection.

The scheme is focused on customer protection. It is not a promotional tool and should not be used to market gambling products.

What happens if 888 receives a GamProtect match?

888 may receive a GamProtect match when another participating operator has added a customer to the GamProtect register and the customer details match an 888 account. In that situation, 888 may act as a Receiving Operator and take steps to reduce the risk of harm.

A GamProtect match may affect access to 888 services in the UK, including applicable 888 products where matching account details are identified. The exact action will depend on the account, the available information and safer gambling obligations.

What information may be shared through GamProtect?

Participating operators may share limited registration information for the purpose of identifying a customer and preventing harm. This may include:

  • First name and surname.
  • Date of birth.
  • Postcode.
  • Email address.
  • Telephone number.
  • A unique customer ID assigned by the operator.

GamProtect matching is designed to help operators identify whether the same customer has an account with them. Where 888 is the Receiving Operator, 888 may be told that a customer has been added to GamProtect and which operator added them, but not necessarily the detailed reason behind the original decision.

Why has my 888 account been closed or restricted?

An account may be closed or restricted because a participating operator identified serious signs of gambling-related harm. Examples may include a customer stating that they:

  • Have a gambling problem or gambling addiction.
  • Are seeking support or treatment for gambling-related harm.
  • May harm themselves or someone else.
  • Should not gamble because of a medical or health-related condition.
  • Want to stop gambling permanently because gambling is causing harm.

If 888 receives a GamProtect match, account action is taken with customer safety in mind. This may not be the outcome a customer expected, but the scheme is intended to help reduce serious harm across participating gambling operators.

How long does a GamProtect restriction last?

The initial active period for GamProtect is five years from the date a customer is first added by a participating operator. During that active period, participating operators are expected to exclude matching customers from their gambling services.

If 888 added you to GamProtect as the Closing Operator, you can contact 888 after the initial five-year period to discuss whether removal from the GamProtect register can be considered. If another operator added you, that operator must review any request for removal.

Removal from GamProtect does not automatically reopen an account. 888 may still decide to keep an account closed or restricted where this is required for safer gambling, legal, regulatory or account security reasons.

Can my 888 account be reactivated?

An 888 account will not usually be reactivated while an active GamProtect restriction remains in place. If another operator added you to GamProtect and you believe the decision is incorrect, you should raise the issue with that operator first.

Once the Closing Operator confirms that you have been removed from GamProtect, 888 can review your account. Any review will still be subject to standard checks, safer gambling considerations and regulatory requirements. Reopening is not guaranteed.

What if I disagree with a GamProtect decision?

If you believe you have been added to GamProtect incorrectly, contact the operator that added you and ask them to review the decision. If 888 was the Closing Operator, contact 888 Customer Support so the decision can be reviewed. If another operator added you, the dispute must be raised with that operator.

If you do not know which operator added you to GamProtect, contact 888 Customer Support. The team can guide you on the next step, although 888 may not be able to change the record unless 888 was the Closing Operator or the other operator removes you from the register.

What happens after removal from GamProtect?

If another operator removes you from GamProtect, allow time for the update to be reflected before contacting 888 about a possible account review. As a guide, you should allow up to 24 hours before requesting a review.

Even after a removal, 888 may still carry out safer gambling, account security, verification and regulatory checks before making any decision about an account.

GamProtect, GAMSTOP and 888 safer gaming tools

GamProtect is different from GAMSTOP. GAMSTOP is a free self-exclusion service that lets customers exclude themselves from online gambling companies licensed in Great Britain. GamProtect is an operator-led scheme used where serious gambling-related harm has been identified.

888 also offers safer gaming tools and support, including self-exclusion options, deposit controls, reminders and access to external support resources. These tools are there to help customers stay in control before gambling becomes harmful.

Need support now?

If gambling is affecting your wellbeing, finances or relationships, help is available. You can contact the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133 for confidential support. If there is an immediate risk of harm, contact emergency services.

GamProtect FAQs for 888 customers

Is GamProtect a self-exclusion service?

No. GamProtect is not the same as customer-led self-exclusion. It is an operator-led protection scheme used where serious gambling-related harm has been identified.

Why did 888 close my account because of another operator?

Another participating operator may have added you to GamProtect, and your details may have matched an 888 account. 888 may then need to take protective action.

Can 888 remove me from GamProtect?

888 can only review removal if 888 was the operator that added you. If another operator added you, that operator must review the decision.

Does being removed from GamProtect mean I can play again?

No. Removal from GamProtect does not automatically reopen an 888 account. Any account review is subject to safer gambling checks and regulatory requirements.

What data is used for GamProtect matching?

Limited registration information may be used, such as name, date of birth, postcode, email address, phone number and a unique operator customer ID.
