Since 19 January 2026, a UK casino bonus has to be earned through casino play, and a betting bonus through betting.
Gambling Commission rules now stop a single promotion from mixing gambling products, so the “bet £5, get 20 free spins” structure no longer runs on any UK-licensed site. Free spins still exist. What changed is how you unlock them.
What Counts as a Mixed-Product Offer?
A mixed-product offer is any promotion that combines more than one type of gambling product inside a single deal. The rule, set out in the Licence Conditions and Codes of Practice, names four categories: betting, casino, bingo and lottery.
Every promotion has two halves: the activity you complete to qualify, and the reward you receive for completing it.
Under the current rules, both halves have to sit in the same category. Spend on casino games and receive casino free spins, and the offer is compliant because the qualifying activity and the reward are both casino products.
Which Promotions Are No Longer Allowed?
Offers that used to bridge two products are the ones that disappeared. A promotion built around placing a football bet to unlock free spins mixes betting with casino, so it can’t be offered. Neither can a deal where the prize itself is mixed, such as a qualifying bet paying out as a free bet plus a set of spins.
The rule applies even when no stake is involved. A free daily reward game offering a mix of free bets, free spins and cash prizes falls foul of it, because the prize pool spans more than one product. The same game offering free bets in several sizes would be fine.
Why Does the Rule Exist?
The Commission’s reasoning centres on risk. The evidence indicated that people who gamble across several products face a higher risk of harm than those who stay with one product, and that mixed offers were a common feature of sign-up deals, making them an efficient way to move customers from one product to another.
There was a clarity argument too. When an offer spans two products, the terms usually span both as well, and linked or shared conditions are harder to follow. Operators argued that stronger marketing consent rules would suffice, but the regulator concluded that consent settings don’t alter how an incentive works once a customer has accepted it.
What Do UK Casino Bonuses Look Like in 2026?
Self-contained is the short answer. A casino promotion requires casino play, pays out a casino reward, and comes with wagering requirements capped at 10x the bonus. Terms are shorter, and the qualifying game categories sit in one place.
One structure does still cross categories, and it’s worth recognising. An operator can award bonus money that you’re free to spend on any product available on the site, because the choice sits with you and isn’t restricted.
“Bet £5, get £10 bonus to use on all products” is permitted on that basis. Flip it around, though, and it isn’t: an offer letting you qualify on any product but paying out only as a free bet is non-compliant, since the operator, not you, decides the reward category.

Mixed Product Bonus Ban in the UK – FAQ
Can I still get free spins from a betting site?
Yes. Free spins are still widely available on UK-licensed sites that run a casino product. The change is in what unlocks them: the qualifying activity has to be casino play, so a sports bet can no longer be the trigger for a spins reward.
Does the ban affect existing bonuses?
The rule governs how promotions are designed and offered, and it has applied since 19 January 2026. In practice, any offer you can claim today has been built to the current requirements. If you’re unsure how an older bonus in your account behaves, the operator’s customer support team can confirm the terms attached to it.
Are casino-only bonuses still legal?
Yes. Single-product promotions are unaffected. A casino welcome offer, a deposit match for slots or a free spins reward tied to casino play all remain permitted, provided they meet the wider requirements on wagering and on clear, fair terms.
